Dana White's Contender Series is a weekly show in Las Vegas where fighters who are not yet in the UFC fight each other for a place on its roster. It first aired in 2017. According to the UFC, its first nine seasons and a Brazilian edition produced more than 300 contracts, and four of those signings later won UFC titles: Sean O'Malley, Jamahal Hill, Jack Della Maddalena and Carlos Ulberg.
How a Contender Series night works
Season 10 started on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and runs for ten straight Tuesdays at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Each week has five bouts, all scheduled for three five-minute rounds, and UFC.com lists a 7 p.m. ET start. In the US, Latin America and Australia every episode streams on Paramount+, which took over the series as part of its UFC deal. In other countries, UFC.com's page for the show lists UFC Fight Pass.
These are real professional fights. The athletes weigh in before each episode and UFC.com publishes the official weights. A referee runs each bout, three judges score any fight that goes the distance, and the result goes on each fighter's professional record. When Luis Hernandez submitted Hugo Guillon in Week 6, for example, UFC.com noted that his unbeaten record moved to 8-0.
What makes it different from a normal card is the audience that matters. Dana White and the UFC's matchmakers sit cageside and score each performance as it happens. When the last fight is over, White announces which fighters, if any, have earned a UFC contract.
Winning is not always enough
Winning a Contender Series bout guarantees nothing. White is judging whether a fighter looks ready for the UFC roster right now, and a close or cautious win can leave him unconvinced.
Week 6 of Season 10, on September 15, 2026, showed how it plays out. Four of the five winners finished their opponents. Mayton Perea knocked out Zevan Hunt 45 seconds in. Igor Cavalcanti stopped Oscar Ravello with ground strikes after 98 seconds. Akbar Abdullaev knocked out Ednilson Santos in 19 seconds with one right hand, and Luis Hernandez survived a knockdown to submit Hugo Guillon a minute into the second round. All four were signed. The fifth winner, Tyshawn Williams, took a unanimous decision over Antonio Monteiro, 29-28, 29-27 and 29-27, after tiring in the middle of the fight. He left without a contract, with the offer of a second chance later in the season.
A clean record does not settle it either. UFC.com's weekly previews spend a lot of words on who a prospect has beaten. Before Week 4, its preview of Patrick Rivera noted that his six-fight winning streak had come against a string of overmatched opponents, only one of whom had a winning record.
Second chances and returning fighters
A loss, or a win without a contract, does not close the door. Fighters come back. Cavalcanti had lost on his first Contender Series appearance at welterweight, two days after his father died. He returned this season at middleweight and needed 98 seconds to earn his deal. Through the first two weeks of Season 10, returning fighters had gone 4-2, according to UFC.com.
The show has its upsets too. In Week 3, Alex Apodaca beat Bella Mir, the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, by unanimous decision. Mir had won all four of her professional fights before that night. UFC.com called it the biggest upset in the show's history.
How many fighters get signed
The record for one season is 46 contracts, set in Season 7 and equalled in Season 9. Season 10 has moved quickly. Fifteen fighters were signed in the first three weeks, the total reached 24 after Week 5, and Week 6 added four more, for 28 after six of the ten weeks.
A contract is a place on the roster, not an instant fight. New signings are booked onto regular UFC cards afterwards. After his win, Cavalcanti said he would be ready to step in at UFC 331 in Los Angeles that same weekend if the UFC needed him, and Abdullaev asked for a fight in October or November.
The champions show how long the road can be. O'Malley came through Season 1 in 2017 and Hill through Season 3. Ulberg is the most recent to reach the top: at UFC 327 in Miami on April 11, 2026, he knocked out Jiří Procházka in the first round to win the light heavyweight title, despite hurting his right leg early in the fight. That made him the fourth Contender Series signing to win a UFC belt and the second at light heavyweight, after Hill.
Other ways into the UFC
The Contender Series is not the only way onto the roster. The Ultimate Fighter, the reality series whose past casts include Forrest Griffin, Kamaru Usman and Rose Namajunas, also moved to Paramount+ for 2026. Road to UFC is a win-and-advance tournament for prospects from the Asia-Pacific region, with a multi-fight UFC contract at the end of it. Its Season 5 semifinals were held in Shanghai on August 28, 2026.
Some fighters are signed straight from other promotions as well. Abdullaev, a Kyrgyzstani lightweight who arrived 13-0 and had already fought in ONE Championship, said after his win that it did not matter to him whether he got to the UFC through the Contender Series, a direct contract or some other way.
